What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a Japanese technique developed during '900, that uses skills, concepts and philosophies of the ancient Chinese and Japanese medicine: Tuina, Anma, Ankyo, Doin and Anpuku. Shiatsu (指圧) literally means "finger pressure", even if the palms, elbows, knees and feet are also used. As in every oriental discipline, it uses a holistic approach to a person, that is considered a unity of body, mind and spirit.

I use the style of Shizuto Masunaga sensei, called Keiraku Shiatsu (Shiatsu of Meridians) or Zen Shiatsu. It is based, indeed, on an energetic diagnosis and balance of energy lines through pressure on the abdomen, back, stretching of limbs and direct pressure on meridians and tsubo, acupressure points. Shiatsu is a complete technique that works on the physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual level. I was lucky to deepen my Shiatsu knowledge in Japan with Susumu Kimura sensei, direct disciple of Masunaga and, for many years, teacher to IOKAI (school founded by Masunaga in Tokyo) and with Haruhiko Masunaga, son of Shizuto and new leader of IOKAI.
